Washington Park urban renewal plan public hearing is held.

March 13, 1962

Some 2,000 people attend the first of four public hearings at Boston Technical High School. Despite the Boston Redevelopment Authority opposing the idea, most strongly support expanding the plan to include Upper Roxbury. Mrs. Melnea Cass, president of the Boston Branch NAACP, declares, “We don’t appreciate [outsiders] telling us how to live. . . Let us tell you what we want, because only we know what we want.” On February 6, 1962, Otto Snowden declares, “Many of them see this renewal program as the last chance to save the area.”
